Duties of Priests and Levites

18Then the LORD said to Aaron: "You, your sons, and your relatives from the tribe of Levi will be held responsible for any offenses related to the sanctuary. But you and your sons alone will be held responsible for violations connected with the priesthood.H3068H559H175H1121H1H1004H5375H5771H4720H1121H5375H5771H3550 2"Bring your relatives of the tribe of Levi—your ancestral tribe—to assist you and your sons as you perform the sacred duties in front of the Tabernacle of the Covenantc.H251H4294H3878H7626H1H7126H3867H8334H1121H6440H168H5715 3But as the Levites go about all their assigned duties at the Tabernacle, they must be careful not to go near any of the sacred objects or the altar. If they do, both you and they will die.H8104H4931H4931H168H7126H3627H6944H4196H4191 4The Levites must join you in fulfilling their responsibilities for the care and maintenance of the Tabernaclec, but no unauthorized person may assist you.H3867H8104H4931H168H4150H5656H168H2114H7126 5"You yourselves must perform the sacred duties inside the sanctuary and at the altar. If you follow these instructions, the LORD's anger will never again blaze against the people of Israel.H8104H4931H6944H4931H4196H7110H1121H3478 6I myself have chosen your fellow Levites from among the Israelites to be your special assistants. They are a gift to you, dedicated to the LORD for service in the Tabernacle.H3947H251H3881H8432H1121H3478H5414H4979H3068H5647H5656H168H4150 7But you and your sons, the priests, must personally handle all the priestly rituals associated with the altar and with everything behind the inner curtain. I am giving you the priesthood as your special privilege of service. Any unauthorized person who comes too near the sanctuary will be put to death."H1121H8104H3550H1697H4196H1004H6532H5647H5414H3550H5656H4979H2114H7131H4191

Support for the Priests and Levites

8The LORD gave these further instructions to Aaron: "I myself have put you in charge of all the holy offerings that are brought to me by the people of Israel. I have given all these consecrated offerings to you and your sons as your permanent share.H3068H1696H175H5414H4931H8641H6944H1121H3478H5414H4888H1121H2706H5769 9You are allotted the portion of the most holy offerings that is not burned on the fire. This portion of all the most holy offerings—including the grain offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings—will be most holy, and it belongs to you and your sons.H6944H6944H784H7133H4503H2403H817H7725H6944H6944H1121 10You must eat it as a most holy offering. All the males may eat of it, and you must treat it as most holy.H6944H6944H398H2145H398H6944 11"All the sacred offerings and special offerings presented to me when the Israelites lift them up before the altar also belong to you. I have given them to you and to your sons and daughters as your permanent share. Any member of your family who is ceremonially clean may eat of these offerings.H8641H4976H8573H1121H3478H5414H1121H1323H2706H5769H2889H1004H398 12"I also give you the harvest gifts brought by the people as offerings to the LORD—the best of the olive oil, new wine, and grain.H2459H3323H2459H8492H1715H7225H5414H3068H5414 13All the first crops of their land that the people present to the LORD belong to you. Any member of your family who is ceremonially clean may eat this food.H1061H776H935H3068H2889H1004H398 14"Everything in Israel that is specially set apart for the LORDc also belongs to you.H2764H3478 15"The firstborn of every mother, whether human or animal, that is offered to the LORD will be yours. But you must always redeem your firstborn sons and the firstborn of ceremonially unclean animals.H6363H7358H1320H7126H3068H120H929H1060H120H6299H6299H1060H2931H929H6299 16Redeem them when they are one month old. The redemption price is five pieces of silverc (as measured by the weight of the sanctuary shekel, which equals twenty gerahs).H6299H2320H1121H6299H6187H3701H2568H8255H8255H6944H6242H1626 17"However, you may not redeem the firstborn of cattle, sheep, or goats. They are holy and have been set apart for the LORD. Sprinkle their blood on the altar, and burn their fat as a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the LORD.H1060H7794H1060H3775H1060H5795H6299H6944H2236H1818H4196H6999H2459H801H5207H7381H3068 18The meat of these animals will be yours, just like the breast and right thigh that are presented by lifting them up as a special offering before the altar.H1320H8573H2373H3225H7785 19Yes, I am giving you all these holy offerings that the people of Israel bring to the LORD. They are for you and your sons and daughters, to be eaten as your permanent share. This is an eternal and unbreakable covenantc between the LORD and you, and it also applies to your descendants."H8641H6944H1121H3478H7311H3068H5414H1121H1323H2706H5769H1285H4417H5769H6440H3068H2233 20And the LORD said to Aaron, "You priests will receive no allotment of land or share of property among the people of Israel. I am your share and your allotment.H3068H559H175H5157H776H2506H8432H2506H5159H8432H1121H3478 21As for the tribe of Levi, your relatives, I will compensate them for their service in the Tabernacle. Instead of an allotment of land, I will give them the tithes from the entire land of Israel.H5414H1121H3878H4643H3478H5159H2500H5656H5647H5656H168H4150 22"From now on, no Israelites except priests or Levites may approach the Tabernacle. If they come too near, they will be judged guilty and will die.H1121H3478H5750H7126H168H4150H5375H2399H4191 23Only the Levites may serve at the Tabernacle, and they will be held responsible for any offenses against it. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation. The Levites will receive no allotment of land among the Israelites,H3881H5647H5656H168H4150H5375H5771H2708H5769H1755H8432H1121H3478H5157H5159 24because I have given them the Israelites' tithes, which have been presented as sacred offerings to the LORD. This will be the Levites' share. That is why I said they would receive no allotment of land among the Israelites."H4643H1121H3478H7311H8641H3068H5414H3881H5159H559H8432H1121H3478H5157H5159 25The LORD also told Moses,H3068H1696H4872H559 26"Give these instructions to the Levites: When you receive from the people of Israel the tithes I have assigned as your allotment, give a tenth of the tithes you receive—a tithe of the tithe—to the LORD as a sacred offering.H1696H3881H559H3947H1121H3478H4643H5414H5159H7311H8641H3068H4643H4643 27The LORD will consider this offering to be your harvest offering, as though it were the first grain from your own threshing floor or wine from your own winepress.H8641H2803H1715H1637H4395H3342 28You must present one-tenth of the tithe received from the Israelites as a sacred offering to the LORD. This is the LORD's sacred portion, and you must present it to Aaron the priest.H7311H8641H3068H4643H3947H1121H3478H5414H3068H8641H175H3548 29Be sure to give to the LORD the best portions of the gifts given to you.H4979H7311H8641H3068H2459H4720 30"Also, give these instructions to the Levites: When you present the best part as your offering, it will be considered as though it came from your own threshing floor or winepress.H559H7311H2459H2803H3881H8393H1637H8393H3342 31You Levites and your families may eat this food anywhere you wish, for it is your compensation for serving in the Tabernacle.H398H4725H1004H7939H2500H5656H168H4150 32You will not be considered guilty for accepting the LORD's tithes if you give the best portion to the priests. But be careful not to treat the holy gifts of the people of Israel as though they were common. If you do, you will die."H5375H2399H7311H2459H2490H6944H1121H3478H4191

The Water of Purification

19The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,H3068H1696H4872H175H559 2"Here is another legal requirement commanded by the LORD: Tell the people of Israel to bring you a red heifer, a perfect animal that has no defects and has never been yoked to a plow.H2708H8451H3068H6680H559H1696H1121H3478H3947H122H6510H8549H3971H3808H5927H5923 3Give it to Eleazar the priest, and it will be taken outside the camp and slaughtered in his presence.H5414H499H3548H3318H2351H4264H7819H6440 4Eleazar will take some of its blood on his finger and sprinkle it seven times toward the front of the Tabernaclec.H499H3548H3947H1818H676H5137H1818H5227H6440H168H4150H7651H6471 5As Eleazar watches, the heifer must be burned—its hide, meat, blood, and dung.H8313H6510H5869H5785H1320H1818H6569H8313 6Eleazar the priest must then take a stick of cedarc, a hyssop branch, and some scarlet yarn and throw them into the fire where the heifer is burning.H3548H3947H730H6086H231H8438H8144H7993H8432H8316H6510 7"Then the priest must wash his clothes and bathe himself in water. Afterward he may return to the camp, though he will remain ceremonially unclean until evening.H3548H3526H899H7364H1320H4325H310H935H4264H3548H2930H6153 8The man who burns the animal must also wash his clothes and bathe himself in water, and he, too, will remain unclean until evening.H8313H3526H899H4325H7364H1320H4325H2930H6153 9Then someone who is ceremonially clean will gather up the ashes of the heifer and deposit them in a purified place outside the camp. They will be kept there for the community of Israel to use in the water for the purification ceremony. This ceremony is performed for the removal of sin.H376H2889H622H665H6510H3240H2351H4264H2889H4725H4931H5712H1121H3478H4325H5079H2403 10The man who gathers up the ashes of the heifer must also wash his clothes, and he will remain ceremonially unclean until evening. This is a permanent law for the people of Israel and any foreigners who live among them.H622H665H6510H3526H899H2930H6153H1121H3478H1616H1481H8432H2708H5769 11"All those who touch a dead human body will be ceremonially unclean for seven days.H5060H4191H5315H120H2930H7651H3117 12They must purify themselves on the third and seventh days with the water of purification; then they will be purified. But if they do not do this on the third and seventh days, they will continue to be unclean even after the seventh day.H2398H7992H3117H7637H3117H2891H2398H7992H3117H7637H3117H2891 13All those who touch a dead body and do not purify themselves in the proper way defile the LORD's Tabernacle, and they will be cut off from the community of Israel. Since the water of purification was not sprinkled on them, their defilement continues.H5060H4191H5315H120H4191H2398H2930H4908H3068H5315H3772H3478H4325H5079H2236H2931H2932 14"This is the ritual law that applies when someone dies inside a tent: All those who enter that tent and those who were inside when the death occurred will be ceremonially unclean for seven days.H8451H120H4191H168H935H168H168H2930H7651H3117 15Any open container in the tent that was not covered with a lid is also defiled.H6605H3627H6781H6616H2931 16And if someone in an open field touches the corpse of someone who was killed with a sword or who died a natural death, or if someone touches a human bone or a grave, that person will be defiled for seven days.H5060H2491H2719H6440H7704H4191H6106H120H6913H2930H7651H3117 17"To remove the defilement, put some of the ashes from the burnt purification offering in a jar, and pour fresh water over them.H2931H3947H6083H8316H2403H2416H4325H5414H3627 18Then someone who is ceremonially clean must take a hyssop branch and dip it into the water. That person must sprinkle the water on the tent, on all the furnishings in the tent, and on the people who were in the tent; also on the person who touched a human bone, or touched someone who was killed or who died naturally, or touched a grave.H2889H376H3947H231H2881H4325H5137H168H3627H5315H5060H6106H2491H4191H6913 19On the third and seventh days the person who is ceremonially clean must sprinkle the water on those who are defiled. Then on the seventh day the people being cleansed must wash their clothes and bathe themselves, and that evening they will be cleansed of their defilement.H2889H5137H2931H7992H3117H7637H3117H7637H3117H2398H3526H899H7364H4325H2891H6153 20"But those who become defiled and do not purify themselves will be cut off from the community, for they have defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. Since the water of purification has not been sprinkled on them, they remain defiled.H376H2930H2398H5315H3772H8432H6951H2930H4720H3068H4325H5079H2236H2931 21This is a permanent law for the people. Those who sprinkle the water of purification must afterward wash their clothes, and anyone who then touches the water used for purification will remain defiled until evening.H5769H2708H5137H4325H5079H3526H899H5060H4325H5079H2930H6153 22Anything and anyone that a defiled person touches will be ceremonially unclean until evening."H2931H5060H2930H5315H5060H2930H6153

Moses Strikes the Rock

20In the first month of the yearc, the whole community of Israel arrived in the wilderness of Zin and camped at Kadesh. While they were there, Miriam died and was buried.H935H1121H3478H5712H4057H6790H7223H2320H5971H3427H6946H4813H4191H6912 2There was no water for the people to drink at that place, so they rebelled against Moses and Aaron.H4325H5712H6950H4872H175 3The people blamed Moses and said, "If only we had died in the LORD's presence with our brothers!H5971H7378H4872H559H559H3863H1478H251H1478H6440H3068 4Why have you brought the congregation of the LORD's people into this wilderness to die, along with all our livestock?H935H6951H3068H4057H1165H4191 5Why did you make us leave Egypt and bring us here to this terrible place? This land has no grain, no figs, no grapes, no pomegranates, and no water to drink!"H5927H4714H935H7451H4725H4725H2233H8384H1612H7416H4325H8354 6Moses and Aaron turned away from the people and went to the entrance of the Tabernaclec, where they fell face down on the ground. Then the glorious presence of the LORD appeared to them,H4872H175H935H6440H6951H6607H168H4150H5307H6440H3519H3068H7200 7and the LORD said to Moses,H3068H1696H4872H559 8"You and Aaron must take the staff and assemble the entire community. As the people watch, speak to the rock over there, and it will pour out its water. You will provide enough water from the rock to satisfy the whole community and their livestock."H3947H4294H6950H5712H175H251H1696H5553H5869H5414H4325H3318H4325H5553H8248H5712H1165H8248 9So Moses did as he was told. He took the staff from the place where it was kept before the LORD.H4872H3947H4294H6440H3068H6680 10Then he and Aaron summoned the people to come and gather at the rock. "Listen, you rebels!" he shouted. "Must we bring you water from this rock?"H4872H175H6950H6951H6440H5553H559H8085H4784H3318H4325H5553 11Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the staff, and water gushed out. So the entire community and their livestock drank their fill.H4872H7311H3027H4294H5221H5553H6471H4325H3318H7227H5712H8354H1165 12But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them!"H3068H559H4872H175H539H6942H5869H1121H3478H935H6951H776H5414 13This place was known as the waters of Meribah (which means "arguing") because there the people of Israel argued with the LORD, and there he demonstrated his holiness among them.H1992H4325H4809H1121H3478H7378H3068H6942

Edom Refuses Israel Passage

14While Moses was at Kadesh, he sent ambassadors to the king of Edom with this message: "This is what your relatives, the people of Israel, say: You know all the hardships we have been through.H4872H7971H4397H6946H4428H123H559H251H3478H3045H8513H4672 15Our ancestors went down to Egypt, and we lived there a long time, and we and our ancestors were brutally mistreated by the Egyptians.H1H3381H4714H3427H4714H7227H3117H4714H7489H1 16But when we cried out to the LORD, he heard us and sent an angel who brought us out of Egypt. Now we are camped at Kadesh, a town on the border of your land.H6817H3068H8085H6963H7971H4397H3318H4714H6946H5892H7097H1366 17Please let us travel through your land. We will be careful not to go through your fields and vineyards. We won't even drink water from your wells. We will stay on the king's road and never leave it until we have passed through your territory."H5674H776H5674H7704H3754H8354H4325H875H3212H4428H1870H5186H3225H8040H5674H1366 18But the king of Edom said, "Stay out of my land, or I will meet you with an army!"H123H559H5674H3318H7125H2719 19The Israelites answered, "We will stay on the main road. If our livestock drink your water, we will pay for it. Just let us pass through your country. That's all we ask."H1121H3478H559H5927H4546H4735H8354H4325H5414H4377H1697H5674H7272 20But the king of Edom replied, "Stay out! You may not pass through our land." With that he mobilized his army and marched out against them with an imposing force.H559H5674H123H3318H7125H3515H5971H2389H3027 21Because Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through their country, Israel was forced to turn around.H123H3985H5414H3478H5674H1366H3478H5186

The Death of Aaron

22The whole community of Israel left Kadesh and arrived at Mount Hor.H1121H3478H5712H5265H6946H935H2022H2023 23There, on the border of the land of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,H3068H559H4872H175H2022H2023H1366H776H123H559 24"The time has come for Aaron to join his ancestors in death. He will not enter the land I am giving the people of Israel, because the two of you rebelled against my instructions concerning the water at Meribah.H175H622H5971H935H776H5414H1121H3478H4784H6310H4325H4809 25Now take Aaron and his son Eleazar up Mount Hor.H3947H175H499H1121H5927H2022H2023 26There you will remove Aaron's priestly garments and put them on Eleazar, his son. Aaron will die there and join his ancestors."H6584H175H899H3847H499H1121H175H622H4191 27So Moses did as the LORD commanded. The three of them went up Mount Hor together as the whole community watched.H4872H6213H3068H6680H5927H2022H2023H5869H5712 28At the summit, Moses removed the priestly garments from Aaron and put them on Eleazar, Aaron's son. Then Aaron died there on top of the mountain, and Moses and Eleazar went back down.H4872H6584H175H899H3847H499H1121H175H4191H7218H2022H4872H499H3381H2022 29When the people realized that Aaron had died, all Israel mourned for him thirty days.H5712H7200H175H1478H1058H175H7970H3117H1004H3478
